N-butanol is a primary alcohol with the chemical formula C4H9OH and a linear structure. Making up 85% of the total use, 1-butanol is mainly used in the production of varnishes. It is a popular solvent for nitrocellulose, for example. Various butyl esters, such as butoxyethanol, are used as solvents. Many plasticizers are based on butyl ethers, such as dibutyl phthalate. Butyl acrylate monomer is used to make polymers.
